Cultivar group of peaches with a smooth skin.

Sometimes known as "shaven peach" or "fuzzy-less peach", the nectarine is a peach cultivar with a smooth skin. This is caused by a recessive gene, so it does occur naturally as a 'sport'; but is typically cultivated from existing nectarine trees.

Nectarines were first recorded in English in 1616 although it is thought that they pre-date this within the peach's native range of Central and Eastern Asia.
