I have two small children so I’m concerned this tree may be unsafe. It’s about 35 feet tall, and the “rot” has been getting larger. It began as a discoloration/texture and has turned into a canker that seems to be getting deeper. We recently purchased this house and I believe there were 2-3 years prior where they tree wasn’t properly cared for. I’ve started to increase watering, but the issue persists. The frawns have started to look drier than it’s twin 20 feet away. Can this be fixed? Will it get worse and require removal? Soon? Bay Area, hot dry summers, temperate winters, rarely ever below 50. enter image description here enter image description here

  • Hi Mark M, we can help you better with some photos of the tree and a closeup of the problem. – kevinsky Jul 6 '20 at 13:10
