I've had success propagating by taking a cutting of the top of the plant and sticking in the ground. But often what happens is the leaves die and a new shoot sprouts from the root.

These are tough to handle so I thought maybe id pull a long root (like 3 feet) and cut a bunch of 6 inch root cuttings and stick them in differnt soil types.

Not sure it's going work. these have been sitting covered from direct sunlight. Trying potting soil, planting soil and local florida sandy soil. Been about 2 weeks and i think something is eating the roots or they are drying out.

Any thoughts? i know people always say remove leaves from cuttings on other species, but some cuttings just can't handle that.
