I discovered a large number of these grubs in my flowerbed.

Should I be concerned? Can anybody identify these?

  • Your profile says Hampshire in southern England. Is that where you found these critters? – Niall C. May 10 '19 at 14:04
  • Sorry I should have clarified. These critters are in Basingstoke, Hampshire in the south of England. – robertmegone May 10 '19 at 14:08
  • I dont think this is a grub, at least, not like one I have ever seen before. In my neck of the woods grubs are usually stark white. Could this be some kind of snail? – Rob May 10 '19 at 15:06

Looks like a pupa or chrysalis - I don't recognise it though, maybe a beetle or moth. – Bamboo May 10 '19 at 15:10
  • @robertmegone Either way, I don't think it is any cause for concern, in fact, it is probably just the opposite. – Rob May 10 '19 at 19:10

Managed an ID based upon your hints. It's a Merodon equestris larvae. Commonly known as the Large Narcissus fly.

It's a bulb pest but I'm not sure I mind.

The image that lead to the ID is here: http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk/hoverflies.html
