How do I tell when an eggplant is ready to be picked? Picked the first of these over the weekend and you're right on the flavor. I've never liked eggplant but these just might convert me. |

Can I grow fava beans as a fall crop in New Jersey (USDA Zone 7A)? Last year I never got around to planting a second crop, but this year I did. I forgot to write down exactly when I started them but it was around the middle of July. The first flowers are just starting to come out on a couple of the plants so it looks like I'll get a few before the season is over. Next year I plan on taking better notes and starting them around July 1st. Could be a good crop to put in after my garlic is harvested. |

Are new caterpillar eggs added daily to a brassica that's already under attack? I had a similar experience with my cabbage & kale last year. It seemed like a losing battle and as a last resort I sprayed them all with BT. In a couple days I had no more caterpillars to worry about for the rest of the season and the plants all came back. That’s my weapon of choice now for these. |

Is it safe to add compostable plastics to my compost pile? The cup I have right now says it's made from PLA and that they are "100% renewable, BPI certified compostable and ASTM compliant". It's a GreenStripe Cold Cup from Eco-Products. |

Is it safe to add compostable plastics to my compost pile? @bstpierre A list of potential risks should do. I've tried to keep my garden as organic as I can so one of the concerns I had was if adding this would negate my other efforts or not. |

How do string trimmer accessories compare to dedicated tools In the past I've used a Craftsman tiller but the last two years I've switched to a broadfork and a rake. I'm finding that works best in my beds and takes only a couple minutes each. It worked just as well for the areas where my tomatoes are which is 4 rows totaling about 60 feet. |

Are there any plants that shouldn't be planted near garlic? Is there mention of not planting those things in the same spot that garlic was just grown in? Mine was harvested two weeks ago and I was planning on growing bush beans in its place. |

Will the effectiveness of soaker hoses degrade too much if I connect multiple ones together? After testing this out my water pressure couldn't provide enough water to the end of the second hose when in series or the ends of both hoses when in parallel. I ended up putting all three hoses on timers so they go on one after the other. |

What kind of a grow lamp can I use in my apartment? This year was my first time using grow lights and this was the exact setup I used. It worked out very well. Another thing that was useful was a heating mat since my setup was in the basement and it was fairly cool down there during the winter months. |
