Keen amateur gardener - wishing I could live up to my dad (an extreme gardener - with JCB and quarry experience) and my father in law - a professional gardener.

comment How can I keep spiders out of the shed?
Not an answer, but I used to try and keep spiders out of my shed, until I realised they had destroyed a wasp nest that was constructed in one corner. Now I leave the spiders to defend against nastier creatures, and just brush the cobwebs off things that I want kept clear :-)

ahh -sorry, I thought you needed to know where you had spread seed/fertiliser. For seeing where you have mown, I would just look for the cut grass :-)

comment What are the optimal growing conditions for chives?
My best chive clump is in partial shade, and on the damper side of our property, and the worst, scraggly clump is at the sunniest, dryest side. This is in Scotland though, so the ground is moist all year round, and the temperature is normally between -5 and +25 Celsius.

comment How is a lumpy lawn flattened out?
I don't know, to be honest. You could give it a shot, and if it fails you can still come back to peeling the turf off.

comment How long does it take for the compost to ripen?
My bin is one of these lid-and-door ones, so you can always get compost from the door at the bottom while adding scraps in at the top. In central Scotland ours took about 18 months to get a really good compost going, but now the process is continuous.
