comment What are these trees in the front of the picture?
Looks like a palm tree. There are quite a number of palms trebrown.com/palms_arecaceae.php. Perhaps you can get a picture closer up showing it's fruits or flowers...

comment Chilli sprouts are too close together. Should I start culling them?
@itsmatt makes a good point, if you are only interested in 1 -2 then make sure you select the largest healthiest looking seedlings, they usually go on to make the best plants.

comment What are the names of these two succulent plants?
'It is considered an invasive species' that depends on where you live. It is native to my country (South Africa) and we call them sour figs and make jam from the dried 'fruits' that form after the flower. Invasive species is a relative term ;)

Ah that could be the reason. I notice that in mid summer some plants don't grow as well as in spring autumn and it's probably that the sun is too strong at that time.

comment How much lighting do I need for growing lettuce using indoor hydroponics?
@BRM if you use 80 watt compact fluorescent light (CFL) you don't need a ballast just plug it in normal fitting. From personal experience I know these lights work well with lettuce and basil. In my answer there is a link, you can pick up a CFL for like $30.

I also use a computer fan in the grow area as air flow is important. If you want to have a bit of fun you can even add carbon dioxide. In a bottle combine yeast sugar and water make a hole in the cap, connect a pipe from the bottle to a glass of water make sure the pipe connected to the bottle is air tight. The yeast metabolises using sugar, giving off carbon dioxide which bubbles into the glass of water.
