I'm not sure what difference you're trying to draw between a spade and a shovel... they're both mostly the same tool or different forms of the same tool (more often called a spade in the UK and shovel in the US). At best, a spade could be called a type of shovel (since you have shovels for dirt, snow, coal, etc.)

Depends on how much you wanter each time... I would water it well once a day. Twice might be a bit overkill

That could be another reason... they do require a steady water supply and should never be allowed to dry out

Ok, that's good then. Hydrangeas don't like too much sun and your leaves and flowers seemed like they were getting scorched (mine did last year before I learnt more about them and the leaves and flowers looked like this)
